I met Chris for the first time in person in 2017 during a RemoteEx workshop in Iceland but had heard from several friends what a scientific and joyful force he had been at UNIS, Svalbard, for several years. In Iceland, I saw how easily Chris made friends, how astute he was in his observations, and how fun-loving and interested he was in his environment. The glaciology community was shocked when we first heard of his brain tumor and I cheered for him when he was making leaps in recovery. As Chief Editor of the Journal of Glaciology I can say that Chris has done several excellent reviews over his career and he was often suggested by authors as reviewer for their papers, even in recent years. I thank Chris for being such a bright light to many colleagues and friends. He will be missed dearly by the community.
