I first met Chris in 2012 at the EGU meeting in Vienna. He taught me a lot about fracture mechanics and I subsequently read all of his avalanche papers. I'd see him at the AGUs in San Francisco and enjoyed hearing about his pivot to working on glacier fracture at JPL, Arctic work at UNIS Svalbard, then closer to home at MSU.
It made me smile to read through these posts. I loved how unconventional he was. In fact, at the last AGU I saw him at, maybe 2018, he was essentially wearing a glacier suit at the poster session. Definitely a field scientist.
