I was deeply saddened to hear of Chris's passing. He was a really bright applied mathematician, computational scientist, and glaciologist. I deeply respected (and still do respect) the work he has done on ice-sheet and ice-shelf dynamics. When he was based in Svalbard, he invited me as a guest lecturer, one of the most exciting trips I've been on! He took me on my first and only tour of an ice cave near Longyearbyen.
