I had the opportunity to meet Chris in Svalbard; he was my supervisor for my master’s thesis, in 2017. I still remember when I emailed Chris, asking if he was willing to supervise me after having spent a spring in Longyearbyen and having fallen in love with the Arctic. He had no hesitation. He was the one who introduced me to modelling glaciers and fracture mechanics. He was a great mentor overall—brilliant, patient, and smart—and always had so many ideas. He was an amazing skier, too, in super shape, always looking for adventures and careful in giving advice on outings in Svalbard. His students loved him. He was a charmer in class, always able to get the attention of everyone and explain everything with such ease. During my time there, we applied together for some funding to do some work on Tunabreen, which was still surging at the time. That trip is still one of the best field seasons I have ever done. It was a stunning day, and we were setting up a laser scan on the ridge overlooking the glacier. He was so ecstatic at the view of all those crevasses—he was in his element. So I'd like to remember him like this, enjoying the beautiful views of Tunabreen. He is and will continue to be a point of reference for me, both in the realm of science and as a remarkable human being. Thank you for giving me so much!
