JPL recently posted a lovely announement of Chris's passing, which I thought I should share (link below), and it inspired me to provide a little more info about Chris's research for those who might not be familiar with it. In a nutshell, Chris started out looking at the mechanics behind how/why a snowpack on a slope fails to cause an avalanche. At JPL, this morphed into an effort to improve our understanding of the collapse of glaciers and ice shelves by describing their failure in terms of the propagation "damage" through the ice structure. Everytime he talked about "damage" we would laugh and quote the movie Heathers; "What's your damage, Heather?" It never got old. You might also be interested to see his research profile on ResearchGate where all his publications are listed.
