Chris and I were roommates during grad school for a year when we lived in a small basement apartment in Vancouver together with Jed. I had to duck under certain sections not to hit my head. We hung out a lot during his time in Vancouver, which overlapped with mine. Then ran into each other a couple times afterwards at conferences, which was always super fun. There are lots of stories that could be told, but I think this one stands out for me as a real display of his character. I hope that it is not too sad! As we were living together a young masters student in his supervisor's research group had a fatal accident while back country skiing on the North Shore of Vancouver. It was shocking for everyone, but Chris took it upon himself to host the students family on their visit and to piece together the accident as much as possible for them (especially given his back country expertise). Then he initiated and helped to organise a memorial lecture and event day to spread awareness and knowledge about the accident and the science that can help. I just looked again online, and it looks like the lecture series went on for at least another 15 years afterwards (maybe it is still going on, I couldn't really tell). That is just the kind of guy he was. It is a real loss for everyone that he left too soon. It also would have been nice to run into him again at another conference and recall the grad student days over a couple of beverages.
